This EPV approved course is designed to equip school leaders and educators with the knowledge, strategies, and tools to embed inclusive, strengths-based, and sustainable whole-school practices that ensure autistic learners and all pupils thrive in an equitable school environment. Through a combination of policy understanding, practical implementation, and leadership development, participants will explore how to create a truly inclusive school culture where every child belongs. This course was developed by School Principals Helena Regan and David Cashman.

Modules

Module 1: Laying the Foundation for Inclusion: The Rationale, Rights, and Realities of Establishing an Autism Class
This module introduces the principles of inclusive and neuroaffirmative practices and examines the legal and policy framework that underpins autism education in Ireland. Participants will explore how schools can establish an autism class as an integral part of the whole-school community, ensuring equity, inclusion, and sustainable leadership.

Module 2: Building an Effective Autism Class: Daily Strategies, Team Roles, and Inclusive Communication
This module focuses on effective planning and preparation to ensure a smooth and inclusive start to the school year. Participants will explore key practical and strategic considerations for setting up the physical environment, planning for new pupils, and fostering strong collaboration among staff, parents, and mainstream teachers.

Module 3: Planning for Success: Strengths Based Approach to working with the Autistic Learner & Pupil Voice
This module explores individualized and inclusive approaches to supporting autistic learners, focusing on strengths-based teaching, curriculum adaptation, and meaningful pupil participation. Educators will learn how to use pupil passports, Individual Education Plans (IEPs)/Student Support Plans (SSPs), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to create engaging, accessible, and inclusive learning environments. The module also examines the Lundy Model of Pupil Voice, emphasizing how empowering autistic learners benefits both the individual and the wider school culture.

Module 4: Best Practices and Proactive Strategies: Implementing NCSE & DE Guidelines for an Inclusive School
This module provides a structured approach to implementing best practices for autism education, aligning with NCSE and DE guidelines to support student engagement, participation, and well-being. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies for addressing the eight elements of autism good practice and apply a proactive, regulation-first approach to behaviour support in the autism class and whole-school setting.

Module 5: Championing Inclusion: Embedding Best Practice to Create a School Where Every Child Belongs
This final module consolidates learning from Modules 1 to 4, guiding participants in translating individual inclusive practices into a whole-school culture of belonging. Participants will explore strategies to embed inclusive policies, teaching approaches, and behaviour supports into school-wide planning and leadership structures. The module will also examine Looking at Our School (LAOS) and School Self-Evaluation (SSE) as key frameworks for prioritizing inclusion as a sustainable school improvement goal.
